8 – Tri-State Agronomic Scout School

Due to the limited number of scout schools offered in recent years, the Jackson County Extension Office will host this half day event discussing pest identification, seasonal occurrence, and economic thresholds in row crops (peanut, cotton, corn, soybean). Speakers include Drs. Ron Smith (cotton), Tim Reed (soybean), and Kathy Flanders (corn) from Auburn University, and Dr. Mark Abney (peanut) from UGA. The event is free from 8-12 and will end with a sponsored lunch.

14- Prevent T2- The National Diabetes Prevention Program

This FREE program will begin on June 14 and will continue to accept participants through the first week in July. This lifestyle change program has been proven effective in to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. In the United States, the CDC estimates 28% of people with diabetes are undiagnosed equaling just over 8 million people. Are you at risk? Are you over the age of 40? Are you overweight? Do you have a parent or sibling with diabetes? Are you physically active? Join us on Wednesdays from 2 pm to 3 pm in the multi-purpose event room at the Florida Department of Health, Jackson County 4979 Healthy Way, Marianna. 17 – Mead Making Workshop 2017

Mead is an alcoholic beverage made from fermenting honey. Mead is described in various writings from Aristotle, Pliny the Elder, and in the epic poem Beowulf. This workshop will teach you everything you need to know in order to make your own mead at home! You will go home with a small carboy, airlock, honey, and yeast. The registration fee is $35.00 and covers lunch and all materials and equipment to make your own mead. The workshop is limited to 24 participants. A hands-on learning experience and you will take home the product you make! This workshop covers home canning basics, food safety and proper procedures. The cost is $10 per person, this includes all supplies. Space is limited, pre-register by calling 850-482-9620.

5- My Florida Home: A Class for First-time Home Buyers

Completion of this course fulfills the home ownership requirements for the SHIP and Rural Development programs. This 6 hour course is designed to educate participants regarding the home buying process, the financial responsibilities, and basic home care and maintenance techniques to maintain the home’s value and avoiding costly repairs. Topics include personal finances and credit situation, determining home much home you can afford, working with housing professionals, choosing a mortgage, and preventing foreclosure.
