Master Gardener Activities

There are many projects and activities to keep the Jackson County Master Gardener graduates busy. Whether assisting teachers with classroom garden plots; providing landscape designs, plant recommendations and labor to local agencies and clubs; or presenting educational programs to groups, such as the Senior Citizen Center or one of the many gardening circles, Community Service Projects allow Master Gardeners to demonstrate their knowledge on many different levels.

The annual Spring Plant Sale offers quality vegetables and unique landscape plants to the public at reasonable prices. Colorful, hand-painted gourd birdhouses and whimsical Tin Men are in-demand yard items, and just another example of the Master Gardeners' talents. Proceeds from all sales are used to fund additional programs, as well as the (future) purchase of a demonstration greenhouse. Below, Master Gardeners prepare for sale.

Another successful, annual event is the Fall Daffodil Program & Bulb Sale.  The Master Gardeners pre-sell Daffodil bulbs in the spring. There are several varieties to choose from, which are generally available only by mail-order. The Fall Daffodil Program, a comprehensive, informative class on raising Daffodils, is usually held in October. Daffodil bulbs will be available for purchase on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Educational programs are offered by the Extension Service on topics covering livestock, forages, ponds, forestry, land stewardship, healthy lifestyles, row crops, horticulture, and 4-H day camps for youth. The Master Gardeners often assist in various capacities, including program development and presentations. The pictures below are from the Backyard Vegetable Gardening, a joint-venture, comprehensive, four-week class between Extension and Master Gardeners.
