Upcoming 4-H Educational Events – 2018

Florida 4-H Horse Leader Retreat, January 13-15

The Florida 4-H Horse Program faculty invite 4-H Agents and Horse Volunteers/Leaders to join them at a workshop/retreat on January 13-15, 2018 at the Welaka State Forest camping facility. This will be an excellent opportunity for 4-H Agents to gain some experience with horses and more in-depth familiarity with the 4-H Horse Program. Leaders will broaden their foundation and go home with new ideas and activities to do with their clubs. You are welcome to bring your horse (there will be plenty of time built in for arena/trail riding, whichever you prefer), though what you gain from the program will be similar whether or not you bring a horse. Workshops will be a mixture of classroom and hands-on programming. A large focus of the retreat will be introduction the new leader guide called Horse Smarts. This is the new reference for Horse Bowl and Hippology in 2018. Leaders will be offered the reference at a discounted prince, and agents from counties with competitive horse teams will receive one complimentary copy per county.   Registration is via Eventbrite and due January 5. 4-H & FFA Livestock Judging and Meat Judging Clinics, January 12-13

Club leaders, coaches, and 4-H Agents interested in fielding Meat or Livestock Judging Teams in 2018 are encouraged to bring their students to Gainesville for concurrently running Livestock and Meats judging clinics. The Meat Judging program will be held at the UF Animal Sciences Building in the Meat Processing Center (plan on cold coolers). The Livestock Judging program will be held at the UF Horse Teaching Unit (a covered open-air facility, so be prepared for weather variations). Both clinics will start at 2 pm on Friday, January 12th with educational sessions, and again at 8 am on Saturday, January 13th for mock contests. There will be a dinner at the HTU for participants in both programs Friday at 6:30pm.

Registration is via Eventbrite and due January 9. Full details and link to registration:  http://animal.ifas.ufl.edu/youth/livestock/livestockJudgingSchool.shtml

Hog & Ham Workshop, January 15

The Florida 4-H Hog and Ham Program is a statewide 4-H program which takes the participant through the total process of pork production from beginning to end. Youth select a feeder pig and grow it to harvesting weight, all the while keeping records on feed amounts and costs, health care, expenses, weights, etc. After harvesting the hog and processing it into wholesale or retail cuts, 4-H’ers cure the hams and prepare bacon and sausage for smoking. The project concludes by participating in a retail comparison project, completing a record book, and presenting a demonstration or illustrated talk to the other participants.  In order to familiarize everyone with the Hog & Ham program and provide them with the background information needed for success, youth interested in Hog & Ham are required to attend this Workshop before participating in the Hog & Ham Program (except those who completed all phases of the 2017 program).  Registration is via Eventbrite and due January 12. 4-H Horse Project Workshop, January 20

Join us to learn about:  Horse Quiz Bowl, Hippology, Horse Public Speaking and Horse Demonstrations.  This workshop will help you earn a spot at state and regionals!  Registration fee is $8 and may be made at 4HOnline. Deadline to register is January 15th.

4-H Ranch Horse Clinics, February 3

Not enough content details are set at this point to advertise and open registration, but please consider this as a “save the date.” When everything is confirmed, there will be a link to this clinic from the main ANS Youth page, http://animal.ifas.ufl.edu/youth/, probably by the end of the week.
